Shongweni is not famous for the big five, although we found evidence that leopards, buffalo and rhinos used to live here some years ago. No, Shongweni’s strengthsare its rich biodiversity. Dragonflies, frogs, rare bats, birds, butterfly and the precious dung beetles, these are what makes Shongweni such an important biodiversity site in a municipal area.

The new management company is in the process, together with the mentoring company and eThekwini Department of Environment, to proclaim Shongweni a protected area. Yes, you’ve just read it, as of November 2019 Shongweni is not a protected area. Everyone recognizes its value, the critical role the reserve plays cleaning the air that many factories pollute, the potential that this place has in terms of tourism development, but no one, till now, has ever started the process of declaring it a protected area.

This is why we encourage tourists and staff to get pleasure in enjoying little things that make up the most of what biodiversity represents, like the dung beetles and frogs instead of rhinos, because that’s where the magic happens, in little things, that most people don’t notice when they there, but that if had to disappear, the whole world would be affected.ong point is its rich biodiversity. Dragonflies, frogs, rare bats, birds, butterfly and the precious dung beetles, these are what makes Shongweni such an important biodiversity site in a municipal area.
